Textured Yarns Explained: High-Elastic, Low-Elastic & Interlaced Filament Properties and Fabric Applications

In the world of apparel and home textiles, elasticity has become a key feature for comfort and performance. Whether it is the stretch recovery of sportswear or the gentle give of casual trousers, the answer often lies in one essential material: synthetic elastic yarns. This article systematically explains three major types of textured elastic yarns: high-elastic yarn, low-elastic yarn, and interlaced yarn (also known as air-interlaced yarn), covering their technical principles, performance differences, and fabric applications.

1. All Belong to the Textured Yarn Family

When polyester, nylon, or polypropylene is first extruded from a spinneret, the filaments are smooth, straight, and plastic-like; this is called straight filament (fully drawn yarn, FDY). To achieve elasticity, bulk, or warmth, the filament's shape must be modified; hence the textured yarn technology.

Textured yarns fall into two main categories:

  • Bulked Continuous Filament (BCF): Focuses on bulk and warmth (e.g., acrylic BCF for blankets and faux fur).
  • Elastic yarns: Provide stretch and extensibility. The three types discussed here—high-elastic, low-elastic, and interlaced yarns—all belong to the elastic yarn family.

The main raw materials are polyester (PET) and nylon (polyamide). Among them, polyester low-elastic yarn is the most widely used synthetic elastic yarn globally. All three share the core production process of false-twist texturing: the yarn is heated, twisted like a twist of dough, heat-set, and then untwisted, so the fibers retain a spiral crimp and gain spring-like stretch and recovery.

In one sentence:

  • High-elastic yarn focuses on high stretch
  • Low-elastic yarn focuses on comfortable, gentle stretch
  • Interlaced yarn focuses on wool-like aesthetics

2. High-Elastic vs Low-Elastic: The Second Heater – on the Texturing Machine

Both high-elastic and low-elastic yarns are classified as DTY (Draw Textured Yarn). Starting from polyester chips, POY (pre-oriented yarn) is first spun, then fed into a texturing machine for drawing, false-twisting, and heat-setting.

How are they distinguished on the same machine?

The key lies in whether the second heater is active. A texturing machine typically has two heaters:

  • First heater: Heats and softens the yarn before twisting.
  • Second heater: Performs an additional heat-setting after twisting but before untwisting.
  • Second heater ON: Additional heat treatment stabilizes the crimp; stretch becomes moderate → low-elastic yarn.
  • Second heater OFF: Yarn is cooled and set directly in its twisted state → maximum stretch → high-elastic yarn.

Because high-elastic yarn uses fewer processing steps (no second heater), it is actually cheaper than low-elastic yarn. However, its crimp stability is slightly lower, and long-term stretch recovery may be less consistent.

3. Stretch vs Bulk: Two Different Directions

High-Elastic Yarn

  • Elongation at break can reach >300%, with rapid recovery after stretching.
  • Bulkiness is moderate – fibers are tightly crimped and do not occupy much volume in the fabric.
  • Main material: Primarily nylon (polyamide) due to its superior natural elasticity.
  • Typical applications: Stretch denim, swimwear, hosiery, shapewear, sports tights.

Low-Elastic Yarn

  • Elongation at break is usually <50%, providing gentle, comfortable stretch.
  • Bulkiness is high – soft, voluminous hand feel.
  • Main material: Mostly polyester, offering high cost-performance and the largest market share.
  • Typical applications: Knitted outerwear, T-shirts, casual pants, curtain fabrics, upholstery, bedding.

Analogy:

  • High-elastic yarn = tough rubber band – extremely elastic, large deformation.
  • Low-elastic yarn = lightly springy sponge – gentle stretch, soft and bulky.

4. Interlaced Yarn: The “Crossover” in Elastic Yarns

Interlaced yarn is a special member of the elastic yarn family. It is not a third category independent of high/low elastic types, but rather a low-elastic or high-elastic yarn that undergoes an additional air-interlacing process: compressed air is blown onto the yarn, creating periodic entanglement points (interlaced knots) along the filament.

These knots provide unique advantages:

  • Higher cohesion: Filaments do not separate easily, reducing fuzzing; can be woven directly without twisting or sizing.
  • Three types based on interlacing density:
    • No interlacing: No knots, easy to separate.
    • Light interlacing: Many knots but low strength – pulls apart easily.
    • Heavy interlacing: Tight knots – not easy to pull apart.

Most classic application: wool-like fabrics. Ordinary polyester filament yields a “plastic-like” feel. Interlaced yarn, with its surface knots, produces fabrics with soft luster, rich hand feel, and good pilling resistance – highly similar to wool.

Polyester DTY interlaced yarn is available in 50D – 600D and is widely used in suits, shirts, curtains, quilt covers, and sofa fabrics.

6. Common Misconceptions Clarified

  • “High-elastic yarn is better than low-elastic yarn” No absolute superiority. Sportswear brands value high elasticity; home textile brands prefer the comfort of low-elastic yarn.
  • “Both high-elastic and low-elastic yarns can be used for stretch denim” Yes. High-elastic yarn gives a firm, shaping feel; low-elastic yarn gives a soft, gentle stretch.
  • “Interlaced yarn is not an elastic yarn” Wrong. Interlaced yarn belongs to the elastic yarn family. “Low-elastic interlaced yarn” combines low-elastic stretch with interlaced structural advantages.
  • “The lower the denier (D), the better” Not always. Choose by application:
    • 20D – 50D: Ultra-sheer hosiery, high-end blouses
    • 50D – 150D: Daily T-shirts, casual pants
    • Above 150D: Upholstery, curtains, wool-like coats (require durability and body)

7. Summary
